Angry Prayer - 02.03.2003
"We thank God that it was not a time of prayer when they came because their lives would have been in danger if they had," he said, suggesting that angry worshippers would have attacked them.
This sentence came from a USA Today report about some UN inspectors who, on their own time, went to visit a Mosque in Iraq and is quoting the religious leader there. I like to look at it because it makes me laugh. If you read it several times, it becomes even funnier. The irony just hits you over the head like a misdirected scud missile. I wonder what these people pray about? Does communication with their God make them so angry that they want to attack people? I know that when I am busy at prayer, if someone happens into my field of vision, I go after them like a rabid pit bull. Not stopping until there is nothing left but a bloody carcass that scarcely resembles a human being. Or, maybe I’ll just smile at them and say, “God bless you”.
Same difference, I guess.
I have had Muslim friends over the years and they all seemed like very nice, peaceful, normal people to me. But, then again, I was never near them when they were praying. Man, was I lucky or what? I could have been attacked.
I was actually considering converting from Noreligionism to Muslim to prove a point to some people who have let terrorists affect their personal opinions of this religion, but now I have to rethink my position. I need to find a religion where praying actually brings about peace, not hostility. I guess I’ll keep looking for the right religion that suits my needs. I don’t think the way of Allah is for me anyway because Muslims are not allowed to drink alcohol. I think I have more problems with that than with the angry prayer thing. Maybe the two are connected. Maybe those particular Muslims are so damn angry because they can’t hit the sauce from time to time.
Realistically, the Iraqi government probably fabricated this quote in an attempt to make it look like the UN inspectors were up to no good. Sadly, though, it is stories like this that give Muslims a bad name. And unlike Catholics, Muslims don’t have a central place of power where a leader can say, “I know what happened, but I can assure you that Muslims as a whole are not whipped into an angry mob by prayer. We are peaceful people and this is an isolated instance. And the man who said this, though also a Muslim, is a complete ass”.
Just think, if not for the Vatican and the Pope, people might think Catholics supported child molestation. Although, I have never heard anyone say, “That boy would never have been molested if he hadn’t been snooping around while that Priest was deep in prayer”.
"We thank God that it was not a time of prayer when they came because their lives would have been in danger if they had,"
Man, that’s funny.
