It's All About Not Knowing When To Shut Your Mouth

How To Avoid An Impending Disaster or Nuke Those Bastards. 10.08.2002

A friend of mine asked me my opinion on the possible war with Iraq. Normally, I don’t waste my time thinking about things that have not yet happened and that I have no direct impact upon. It seems like a terrible waste of time. This activity is usually reserved for “worriers”. My mother, for instance, is a “worrier”. These are people who don’t mind spending quite a bit of time and energy speculating about things that they have no control over.

The following is a fictitious scenario. It may or may not have happened. It would have been a long time ago, before my brother became a part of the living dead suburbanites and before I started remembering my Friday nights.

Let’s say my brother and I went to a party on a Friday night. My mother calls me very early then next morning and the following conversation takes place.

Mom:Have you talked to your brother today?
Me: No… I’m still sleeping.
Mom:   Do you know if he made it home?
Me: Umm, I think so. I didn’t leave the party till late.
Mom: Well, he’s not answering his phone, I’m worried.
Me: I’m sure he’s sleeping. Like I’m trying to do.
Mom: I called him, like, 10 times. It should have woke him up.
Me: Why would you want to do that?
Mom: I hope he didn’t get arrested for DWI.
Me: He took a taxi home.
Mom: Well, he still could have gotten arrested for public intoxication
Me: Not likely, he wasn’t drunk
Mom: Did he go home alone?
Me: Don’t know. Did I mention I was sleeping?
Mom: Can you check your messages to make sure he didn’t call you looking for help.
Me: Help with what?
Mom: With whatever might have happened to him.
Me: Look Mom. Let’s say something did happen to him and he’s in jail or the hospital or whatever. There’s nothing we can do about it until we know what happened. So don’t waste your time worrying. Just leave a message for him and sit tight till he calls. If you don’t hear from him by lunchtime - let me know.
Mom: …You think he’s in the hospital?
Me: Oh, screw it, I’ll find him.

So I get up to locate my brother. Of course, I find that he was sleeping or had to run into work or is doing some very rash, reasonable thing, and he is not in jail or dead. I understand that sometimes bad things happen, but I just can’t waste my time thinking about those things until they actually happen.

Now, getting back to the question of my opinion.
First of all, death and destruction are very irritating to me, especially if it’s my own. So, I think we should avoid war if at all possible. If that bastard, Saddam, would let inspectors in and conform to the resolutions that ended the Gulf War things would go much smoother. But, the obvious reality is that the only reason he has to keep inspectors out is to hide weapons. Duh!

I think that’s the key. According to UN Resolution 687, Iraq must basically declare, destroy, and not acquire any weapons of mass destruction. I think that pretty much everyone, except Iraq, agrees that Iraq has not met these requirements. Realistically, once the UN inspectors ran into resistance, they should have left Iraq and the Gulf War should have continued until they met the resolutions or the Iraqi government was decimated. You should not play if you do not intend to win. I don’t understand why we have waited until now to do something. How can we justify the time, money, and life that was spent during the Gulf War, if we just let Saddam continue to do as he pleases. If the UN is not willing to enforce this resolution, then their resolutions have no real value. Why should I be interested in anything they have to say? It’s like the parent that keeps telling his kid “ If you don’t stop… you’re going to get a spanking”, but never delivers on the goods. After a while, the kid looks at his parent, smiles, and thinks to himself, “ yeah, right. you big pussy.” Some kids actually say this out loud. This kid has no fear of the consequences of his actions.
Sound familiar?

The bottom line is that I would like to have the UN resolution enforced. I would feel better knowing that the “Iraqi Idiot” didn’t have access to weapons of mass destruction. Hopefully, we can accomplish this feat in a non-violent manner, but considering that we’re talking about the middle east, that’s about as likely as a winning the lottery without buying a ticket.

Since I’m not involved in the decision making process, I feel like whatever is going to happen is going to happen. So, I’ll take a nap while all the “worriers” out there contemplate the different possible scenarios. Wake me up when something actually happens, and then we can talk about it. If it’s a global nuclear war, don’t even bother waking me up.
